Lucas: Thompson's Focus On Hoops, Not Home

Last summer, Deon Thompson went global. This summer, he stayed local. After spending last summer with the Under 19 national team in Serbia, this summer he didn't see anything more exotic than the inside of the Smith Center weight room. Blocked Kick Turns Defensive Momentum

Butch Davis stressed special teams throughout Carolina's month-long training camp. That emphasis paid off in the season opener, as a seemingly insignificant blocked point-after touchdown might have been the defensive turning point for a defense that needed an energy boost. (more)

No. 15 Carolina Faces Gamecocks, No. 14 Bruins

No. 15 North Carolina will look to build on an unbeaten opening weekend when it faces South Carolina and No. 14 UCLA Friday and Sunday at Wake Forest's Deacon Fall Classic at Spry Stadium. The Tar Heels (2-0-0) will take on the Gamecocks (1-0-1) at 5 p.m. Friday and the Bruins (1-1-0) at 1 p.m. Sunday. (more)

Volleyball To Open Home Slate With Carolina Classic

After one of the most competitive opening season tournaments in recent memory the North Carolina volleyball team returns home to host the annual Carolina Classic. The Classic will have a different feel to it this year as all six matches will be played in the Dean E. Smith Center while Carmichael Auditorium undergoes renovations during the 2008 season. Davidson and Georgetown open tournament play at 4:30 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 5 before the Tar Heels take the floor against Missouri State at 7 p.m. (more)
