Tate Named Progress Energy Performer Of The Week

Sept. 1, 2008

Senior wide receiver Brandon Tate set a pair of school records in leading Carolina to a 35-27 win over McNeese State and is the Progress Energy Tar Heel of the Week for August 25-31, 2008.

Tate compiled a UNC single-game record 397 all-purpose yards, surpassing the 339 yards posted by tailback Derrick Fenner against Virginia in 1986. It is the second-most all-purpose yards in ACC history (Wake Forest's John Leach had 411 vs. Maryland in 1993). Tate also set the UNC single-game record for highest average punt return (min. three) with 47.3 yards per return. The previous record was 41.7 by Charlie Justice vs. Georgia in 1948.

The Burlington, N.C., native had 93 receiving yards, 106 rushing yards, 142 punt return yards and 56 kick return yards. He became the first wide receiver to rush for 100 yards in a game in UNC. He posted his career long reception (57 yards), his career best punt return (82 yards) and matched his career long rush (54 yards). He scored two touchdowns - one via punt return and one on a pass reception - and now has 13 TDs in his career.

Other nominees:

CASEY NOGUEIRA
Women's Soccer, Forward
Junior, Raleigh, N.C.

Casey Nogueira had two goals and one assist for five points, just one short of her career high in a game, as the Tar Heels beat No. 13 Texas A&M 3-2 in College Station last Friday. Nogueira scored twice in the first half to stake UNC to a 2-0 lead before A&M rallied to tie the game. Nogueira then assisted on Courtney Jones' game-winning goal in the 83rd minute allowing the Tar Heels to avenge a loss at Texas A&M two years ago. UNC also beat No. 14 Tennessee 1-0 Sunday to improve to 3-0 on the season.

DANIELLE FORWORD
Forward, Field Hockey
Junior, East London, South Africa

Junior Danielle Forword scored a career-high four goals (one short of the school single-game record) in Saturday's season-opening 6-0 win over No. 9 Michigan at the ACC-Big Ten Classic. She opened the scoring with a goal against No. 5 Iowa the following day, putting the Tar Heels up 1-0. (They would go up 2-0 before the Hawkeyes stormed back with three goals to win the game, handing UNC its first loss since the 2006 season.) Forword's weekend total of five goals was nearly half as many as the 11 she scored all of last year, when she ranked third in goals on the highest-scoring team in the nation.

JACOB WESCOE
Goalkeeper, Men's Soccer
Senior, Willow Spring, N.C.

In the first regular season action of his career, senior goalkeeper Jacob Wescoe led the 24th-ranked Tar Heels to a pair of shutout wins at the Carolina Nike Classic. The Willow Spring, N.C., native compiled six saves on the weekend and did not allow a goal en route to all-tournament honors at UNC's annual home event. After making one save in a 3-0 win over Florida International Friday, Wescoe made a career-best five stops Sunday in the 1-0 overtime victory over VCU.
